On June 10, 2019, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and King's College London (KCL) signed an agreement in London to work towards establishing a joint school of medicine in Shenzhen. This collaboration aims to assist the development of the medical service industry across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and calls for in-depth cooperation in academic areas of cross-disciplinary medical research, top medical talent development, medical education and public health care. The future joint medical school will promote Shenzhen as an international city for high-quality health care service, quality medical education and cutting edge research. With the development of the medical service industry, the GBA's international competitiveness will be enhanced through world-class international scientific achievements and medical services. The joint medical school aims to become the benchmark for new medical education in China, and explore an international model of Chinese medical education.

On January 5, 2018, Southern University of Science and Technology signed an enhanced Memorandum of Understanding with King's College London.

King's College London was founded by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister) in 1829 as a university college in the tradition of the Church of England. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom and a founding constituent college of the University of London. King's has over 31,000 students (including more than 12,800 postgraduates) from some 150 countries and over 8,500 employees.
